French Teachers SA

Who are we?

The South Australian French Teachers' Association (SAFTA), established in 1977, is a professional organisation dedicated to supporting French language educators across South Australia. SAFTA aims to support professionals teaching French in all educational sectors—primary, secondary, tertiary—and across all systems, including government, independent, and Catholic institutions and to encourage and promote interest in French language and culture within schools and universities.

To fulfil its mission, SAFTA engages in various activities, including collaboration with the Alliance Française d’Adélaïde to provide cultural and educational events, as well as working with the Modern Language Teachers Association of South Australia (MLTASA) to support language educators.

SAFTA is affiliated with the Federation of Associations of Teachers of French in Australia (FATFA), and through FATFA, connects with the Fédération Internationale de Professeurs de Français (FIPF), fostering national and international professional networks.

Through these initiatives, SAFTA strives to enhance the teaching and learning of the French language and to deepen the appreciation of French culture in South Australia.

Our Secondary pétanque campions are Renmark High School

Poetry competition

The annual ‘Concours de Poésie Récitée’ is open to French students from Reception to Year 8. Each year level is assigned a poem to memorise and recite. Teachers select the top three students from their respective year levels and submit their recordings to SAFTA for judging. Winners are recognised at the annual Distribution des Prix, where they perform their poem before an audience.

Friday 29 August 2025 (T3 W6)

Year 9 Quiz night

The Year 9 French Quiz Night is a fun and relaxed evening for groups of Year 9 French students from across SA to get together in friendly competition, testing their general knowledge across a range of French themes – music, geography, art, sport and more. This is a great opportunity for students to connect with like-minded peers from other schools and perhaps even win some prizes!

Term 3 2025 - Date TBC

SAFTAGram Reel competiton

The SAFTAgram Reel Competition is open to French students in Years 8–10. Each year, students are given a new task to create an engaging reel in French with English subtitles. Teachers select the top three entries from their school for SAFTA’s judging panel. The winning reel is showcased to an audience at the end-of-year Distribution des Prix.

Due date:

Friday 12 September 2025

(T3 W8)

Best Year 6 or 7 Prize

The Best Year 6 or 7 Prize takes place in Term 3 each year. Year 6 or 7 students from across South Australia are invited to write a letter (in French) to the president of SAFTA, introducing themselves and showcasing the French skills they have developed over their first semester of French. (Or, for continuing students, a culmination of their French learning so far!) This is a great opportunity for students to look back on how much they have learnt and how far they have come, as well as to write an authentic introductory text to somebody who doesn't know them. The best letter-writer from each school is awarded a prize from SAFTA and will be invited to attend the prize-giving ceremony, which takes place in Term 4.

Due date:Friday 29 August 2025 (T3 W6)
